Up North Loop Bikepacking Adventure: 5 Days of Gravel, Trails, and Minnesota Beauty (2026)

Bikepacking the Up North Loop: An Adventure in Northern Minnesota

Exploring the Backroads

In my experience, bikepacking is best enjoyed with a small group of like-minded adventurers. So, when I gathered eight riders for the Up North Loop, I knew we were in for a unique journey. This 5-day, 238-mile route showcases the beauty and diversity of Northern Minnesota, from gravel roads and OHV trails to historic mining towns and serene campgrounds.

Day 1: Off to a Great Start

We began our adventure in Chisholm, a charming town with a rich mining history. After a hearty breakfast at Black Bear Bakery, we set off, eager to explore. The first day offered a delightful mix of paved roads, gravel, and OHV trails. These lightly used trails provided punchy climbs and rocky descents, keeping us engaged and excited for more.

One of the highlights was Bimbo's Octagon, a unique lunch spot with pinball machines. Unfortunately, it was closed, but we found a gem in the Side Lake Store, offering a perfect resupply with cold drinks and local treats. A river crossing added an unexpected challenge, but it was manageable and worth the thrill.

Day 2: Memorable Stops and Scenery

Day 2 started leisurely, and for good reason. We wanted to visit Deer Lake Charlie's, a legendary bar with a rich history. The two-track trails and forest roads led us to this hidden gem, where we were welcomed by the owners, Gail and SuZanne. Their bar, an eclectic time capsule, offered a delightful break and a chance to immerse ourselves in local stories.

The route then revealed the region's logging industry, with clear-cut areas providing stunning views. Horseshoe Lake offered a peaceful fishing break before we transitioned into agricultural landscapes. Crossing the Big Fork River was a refreshing highlight, and the small towns of Effie and Bigfork provided a warm welcome with their local eateries and friendly locals.

Day 3: Forest Roads and Hidden Gems

Day 3 took us through some of the most enjoyable forest roads I've ever experienced. The tall pine forests, smooth gravel, and absence of traffic created a serene atmosphere. Arrowhead Lake provided a much-needed break, with fishing and a quick swim to wash away the dust.

The route then led us to Hayslips Corner, a tiny bar that became our oasis. The food and drinks were a welcome treat before we faced the busiest stretch of the route. The Chow Hall & Class VI at Northstar Resort, owned by military veterans, offered a delicious meal and a nod to military life.

Day 4: Remote Trails and Relaxation

Day 4 began with a retracing of our steps, offering a mix of rolling terrain and red dirt. The forest roads provided a sense of remoteness, and an unnamed lake offered a peaceful fishing break. The Antler Lodge and its out-and-back trail were a highlight, with excellent food and friendly service.

The ATV trails, surprisingly devoid of motorized traffic, provided fun and winding rides. The Trailside Restaurant and Bar marked the final food stop before we approached Wolf Lake, with its dispersed camping options and designated sites offering a perfect end to the day.

Day 5: Mining Heritage and Final Miles

On the last day, we aimed for an early start, eager to finish strong. Quiet forest gravel roads led us towards the Iron Range's mining heritage. The massive Hull-Rust-Mahoning Mine, a historic landmark, reminded us of the region's industrial past.

The route offered a choice between the paved Mesabi Trail and the singletrack through Redhead Mountain Bike Park, catering to different skill levels. The final miles brought us back to Chisholm, completing a loop through the heart of Northern Minnesota's natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The Bikepacking Experience

What makes bikepacking so captivating is the blend of adventure, community, and exploration. This trip showcased the beauty of Northern Minnesota, from its natural landscapes to its vibrant towns. The Up North Loop is a testament to the region's allure, offering a unique blend of challenges and rewards.

Personally, I find bikepacking to be a deeply immersive way to connect with nature and local culture. It's not just about the miles covered, but the experiences shared and the memories made. This trip left us with a deeper appreciation for the region's history, its people, and the joy of exploring by bike.
